Google has announced its commitment to invest $2bn in Malaysia to develop its first Google data centre and Google Cloud region there.
"Google's first data centre and Google Cloud region is our largest planned investment so far in Malaysia – a place Google has been proud to call home for 13 years. This investment builds on our partnership with the Government of Malaysia to advance its 'Cloud First Policy,' including best-in-class cybersecurity standards," said Ruth Porat, the president and chief investment and officer chief financial officer of Alphabet and Google.
Google data centre and cloud region
The Google data centre will power Google's popular digital services, such as Search, Maps, and Workspace.
The Google Cloud region aims to provide low-latency services to large enterprises, startups, and public sector organisations. Customers can maximise key controls that allow them to maintain security, data residency, and compliance standards, including specific data storage requirements.
AI literacy programs
In alignment with the Ministry of Education's (MOE) National Digital Education Policy,  Google also launched Al literacy programs to make digital skills more accessible to Malaysians.
The AI literacy program includes access to the Gemini Academy, which aims to help educators safely and responsibly use generative AI tools such as Gemini. Program beneficiaries can also access Experience AI, which is designed to equip educators with knowledge and skills in teaching about AI.
